Interesting fact: caffeine “can aggravate diarrhea.” (1)

If one has severe diarrhea, much fluid is lost and must be replaced.

Many medical professionals use an oral rehydration solution.

This is a liquid solution that contains glucose and electrolytes. The common electrolytes utilized are sodium, potassium, chloride, and citrate or bicarbonate. (1)

“The glucose in the solution is important because it forces the small intestine to quickly absorb the fluid and the electrolytes.” (1)

Treatment of dehydration resulting from diarrhea

Oral rehydration solutions are given:

Mild dehydration: 50mL/kg over 4-6 hrs. (1)
Moderate dehydration: 100 mL/kg over 6 hrs. (1)

When nausea and vomiting are no longer present, one can introduce food such as rice, bananas, and potatoes.

Lactose free and low fat food items are recommended initially.
